Q. The nasal pillows I have now have a tiny slit in the front that emits a hissing or squealing sound. How can this new apparatus be silenced?

A.  The first thing you can do is check for a properly fit seal by adjusting and tightening the head straps to ensure a snug fit. If the headgear feels tight and you’re still hearing the sound, inspect the cushion for any cracks or tears. Finally, you can change the size of the cushion- an improper fit will cause the cushion to leak and make noise.

Q. If I change my mask from a full-face mask to a nasal pillow mask, are there any adjustments I need to make on my CPAP – or will everything function ok?

A. Everything will still function ok, but to guarantee adequate readings, you will need to access the “My options” menu from the main screen of your CPAP and change the mask type to the style of mask you are currently using. This will ensure the device calculates the correct air pressure and mask leak. If you're having trouble finding the "My options" menu, give your local branch a call and a clinician can walk you through it.

Q. How do I set my machine to automatically turn off when I take my mask off? Is there something I need to do on the machine to get it to stop?

A. This is another setting that can be accessed from the “My options” menu.  Locate the Smart Stop feature from the screen and toggle the button to ON. If this feature is not available to you, please contact your local branch and a clinician will schedule an appointment to manually do this for you from the clinical mode.

Q. How do I change the cushion on my face mask?

A. You can change the cushion on your face mask by disconnecting it from the frame. To do this, gently squeeze together the outsides of the cushion and wiggle it back and forth until the interface releases itself from the frame. This can be challenging sometimes as the cushion may stick, but with enough force, it will eventually pop off. Your cushion typically consists of both silicone and plastic material.

Q. What’s considered a good number for events per hour on your CPAP?

A. A good number of events is 5 or less. If your pap is reading higher than 5 continuously for greater than a week, please contact your therapist and/or physician as pressure setting may need adjusted.
